O’Donovan Rossa Ladies club 2017 season had many highlights   26/02/2018

O’Donovan Rossa Ladies club recently held a very successful registration evening at the Rossa park with a large number of young enthusiastic footballers present as they seek to build on last year’s exploits.

The 2017 season  had many highlights for the club including three West Cork Final wins for the Junior, Minor and U15 teams  along with the U16 girls becoming West Cork runners-up .   A Celebration Dinner  was held  last Saturday night in the West Cork hotel which included the presentation of medals for the 2017 season  and a very enjoyable night was had by players, family, friends and club supporters.

It was also a very busy year for the other age groups from U6 upwards.  The club operate a nursery scheme which introduces young players to football in a fun and safe environment specifically designed to ensure that their first experience of Gaelic games is an enjoyable one.

The U8 girls developed their skills and played numerous friendly games over the season against local clubs as well as participating in a monster West Cork blitz hosted by Clonakilty.

The U10 players enjoyed a very busy season working to build on their core skills and becoming familiar with other West Cork clubs through numerous challenge matches both home and away.  Their season culminated in a trip to the All Ireland Blitz hosted by Passage where they fielded two teams and gained great experience playing teams from Kerry, Laois and Dublin.

The U12 girls fielded two teams last season with the U12A team progressing  from the West Cork league to contend the County qualifiers. They had a great win over Glanmire in the county quarter-final at home on the new Rossa Park pitch but unfortunately lost out by 1 point in the county semi-final to Banteer. The U12C team displayed great performances in the non-competitive West Cork league gaining invaluable experience and improving greatly over the season.

The U14 team began their season with great performances in the West Cork Feile competition held in Clonakilty. The Skibbereen girls won the competition with victories over Courcey Rovers and Valley Rovers. They competed in the A-grade of the West Cork League and progressed to the West Cork semi-final where they lost out to a strong Valley Rovers side. Many of these girls went on to play with the U15 team later in the season and became West Cork Champions!

Two U16 teams competed in the A&C grades of the West Cork Leagues. The U16C team had some great performances and their matches were of huge benefit to the young squad particularly to the U15 girls later in the season. The U16A team progressed to the West Cork final and were unfortunately beaten by a strong Kinsale team.

The U18 girls had an excellent season – competing in the A-grade for the first time and going on to win the West Cork final against a strong and experienced Kinsale team. This was a great occasion for the club.

An adult team was entered for the first time by the club in 2017 – competing at Junior C grade in the West Cork Championship and with a team made up of the U18 panel the players surprised everyone by going all the way and beating a strong and experienced Caheragh team in a great final played on the new Rossa Park pitch.

Huge congratulations to Laura O’Mahony who won an All-Ireland medal with the Cork Minor Ladies in 2017. This is a first for both Laura and O’Donovan Rossa Ladies club and we are all extremely proud of her achievement.

We would like to acknowledge the time and efforts being put in by the players, coaches and parents who are investing in the future success of the club and in parallel enriching the local community. The club members are looking forward with great enthusiasm to the season ahead.
